St. Augustine Art Association Issues Call For Art For 250th America Exhibit
ST. AUGUSTINE, Florida (May 7, 2026) – The St. Augustine Art Association (STAAA), one of the country’s oldest arts associations, is celebrating the 250th Anniversary of America’s founding with a new art exhibit inspired by the Declaration of Independence. “When in the Course of Human Events” invites artists to contemplate the enduring influence and evolving meaning of the United States of America’s most defining document and to create works that reflect their perspectives. The exhibit will be hosted at the St. Augustine Art Association, 22 Marine Street in St. Augustine, and online from Friday, June 5, until Sunday, August 2.
“The Declaration of Independence introduced three ideals – Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness – that have shaped our lived experience since the very founding of the country,” says Jennifer Flynt, Executive Director of STAAA. “We’re excited to see how artists explore these philosophies and choose to capture their voice. We want this exhibit to spark thought, encourage reflection, and create constructive conversation.”
When in the Course of Human Events challenges artists to consider the Declaration of Independence as a whole, including: the philosophies of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness; the concerns and conflicts expressed in the document; and how these philosophies or grievance resolutions have evolved over the years. Accepted mediums include 2D visual art such as original paintings, drawings, printmaking, photography, collage, and digital art; 3D visual art such as sculpture, pottery, ceramics, wood, glass, jewelry, assemblage, and metal; poetry; and fiber arts. Submissions will be judged for acceptance and awards. Awards include the Jean Wagner Troemel Best in Show Award ($500 prize), the Alice Alger Most Creative Award ($250 prize), and the Avery St. Jean Art Place Awards. Artists may submit their works now through Monday, June 1. Works are due for gallery installation and judging by Wednesday, June 3. Awards will be announced at the opening reception on Friday, June 5, during First Friday Art Walk, at 7 p.m. Works will be exhibited through August 2.
