Celebrate Space Exploration With New Mars-Themed Ice Cream Flavor
ST. AUGUSTINE, Florida (September 19, 2025) – With 15 locations throughout Florida, Mayday Handcrafted Ice Creams is the authority on innovative and fun, freshly-churned ice cream. For its newest limited release, the crew at Mayday reached beyond the atmosphere to the reaches of the red planet for inspiration. Beginning Friday, September 19th, Mars Regolith will be available for a limited time at all 15 Florida Mayday locations, with a hyper-limited run of pints available in Mayday’s online store (with shipping nationwide!). This comes just a few days before NASA debuts its 2025 class of astronaut candidates as well as previews the Artemis II Mission, which aims to put humankind back on the moon and, one day, Mars, during a series of livestream events at Johnson Space Center in Houston on Monday, September 22nd – Wednesday, September 24th.
“Mars Regolith has been one of the most exciting flavors we’ve ever created,” says Stephen DiMare, owner of Mayday Handcrafted Ice Creams. “We wanted to capture the spirit of exploration and curiosity, and translate it into ice cream. Using natural ingredients to achieve that Martian red color and layering in textures that mimic the regolith dust was such a fun challenge! It’s playful, delicious, and truly out of this world.”
Mars Regolith is Mayday’s take on red velvet. It consists of a vanilla ice cream base with cocoa powder, and tinted with natural beet and carrot powders, giving the ice cream a light red color. It has a hint of cinnamon and is studded with pieces of Oreos® and graham crackers to imitate regolith, the term for the loose dirt, sand, and broken rock that covers the surface of the red planet. Formed over billions of years, it holds many secrets about the planet’s geological history. Mayday’s Mars Regolith was inspired by Mayday member partner Adam Abitol’s interest in interplanetary exploration. Abitol is a test pilot for commercial aviation, has served as a hurricane pilot for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and was a finalist for the prestigious astronaut candidate program. Mars Regolith is being released in honor of NASA’s upcoming Artemis II Moon Mission, in which astronauts will venture around the moon. It is a critical step toward an eventual crewed mission to Mars.
“At Mayday, we’ve always believed that ice cream should tell a story,” says DiMare. “Every scoop is an opportunity to spark joy, connect people, and surprise them with flavors that feel both nostalgic and adventurous. That sense of whimsy and creativity is at the heart of who we are as a brand. We started as a small Florida ice cream company, and we’ve always made our ice cream with love, care, and a whole lot of imagination. To be able to share those flavors beyond our state is a dream come true.”
